Most of the music you hear today (airplay on the radio) is produced with different forms of sampling sounds, remixing and combining these sounds with computers. Basically a thing you can do with your simple Mac at home, with amazing results. The concept of sampling is to take the best elements of already existing music and to combine them, "remix" elements or to put them into a new perspective with the use of delay, chorus, distortion etc. - e.g. why do you have to invent a drum groove and to start from the scratch although there millions of grooves available with two mouse clicks of your computer (see macster...). You may want to "loop" - repeat - a certain element - transpose it - transform it - a thing almost everyone is able to do.
The cheapest source for interesting sounds is probably you own CD collection - before you start to spend hours downloading sounds to find out, that you will never use them check carefully what you have - some tips:
CDs with advertising or catalogues may contain interesting sound files, groove loops, "athmos", nature sounds etc. - high quality
at the beginning of many tunes you may even not recall there are very good intros with 4 or 8 bars of drum and bass grooves -
Keyboard Demo CDs and CDs enclosed with Magazines about new keyboards contain the latest sounds (from even not yet available equipment!)..., samples, etc.

the most important and probably best download macster nowressource to collect sounds is famous napster: you can not only find almost every song as mp3 file you can imagine (last night almost 1.000.000 mp3 files online, but, even better you find a sophisticated collection of mp3 files, try to search for "Sound Effects" "Sound Files" "Bill Clinton" -- etc. - what a collection. From exotic instruments to Drum loops the resources are unlimited. "Re-cycled" - converted mp3 do not have a stable quality - we have to admit that - but as "lo-fi" is not seen as a fault this is really gives you a very interesting approach... download macster now
some other links... :
Sound America - famous actors speaking, etc.
drum loops if you happen to understand a little bit German try this:
Sound-archive of the "Sender Freies Berlin" (German)
Wizoo Demos in mp2 format
Sound App is a very cute tool again to simplify the preview of the files, while downloading you simply put them on the playlist (you can even put the not yet downloaded file from your desktop right to the playlist), check it - cool.
A warning: rather start composing songs than collect every sound you can get hold of... You HD-space is the limit...
