software synthesizer
the synthiMac
<
Even with the free demo versions of many software synths you can produce professional sounds. The manufacturers have to sell the programs - so they allow you to hear the best sounds in advance!.
A major challenge for you - if you just want to work with the demo versions is to record your ideas, as usually Demo Versions simply do not allow you to record to harddisk.
A simple solution:...iMacs and Macs with two earphone outputs allow to "self record" sounds (although you monitor your work with the headphones) of all the sounds your iMac produce, e.g. from soft synth demos that canīt write on the hard disk: Simply connect the headphone output with the micro phone input - check carefully that you have the right setup for input and record what you improvise live.
Musicians that own device like tube preamps, digital delays, compressor or limiter may try to use this to enhance the recorded sounds with several filters. Probably the POD or a high quality digitals sound processor gives you endless modifications and you may even try to applify your sounds first and to record the with a mic.
I recommend the simple recording Freeware "Coaster" for doing this basic recording. Donīt try to find out how to play your recordings with Coaster, this is just not possible with the programme.

Koblo`s software synths - sounds japanese, but they are situated in Denmark - are really a surprise. The most currents versions are available from their homepage they are famous real time software synthesizers, you may listen to "A Hack in Koblo" at mp3.com to hear what you can even do with the simple freeware Vibra1000. What is not mentioned in the documentation: You can open copies of the Vibra 1000 if you create full copies of the Vibra/Tokyo combination - this gives you a unlimited multiphonic synth - incredible sounds are possible. Due to the fact, that some features are connected you can use the nobs of various copies influencing the same parameter - cool.
Tip: If you copy the Demos from a CD (Keyboard or Computer magazines) be aware you always need the engine called "Tokyo" (this may be in different folders although it should not)- also it is important to have the correct version of both.
The larger Synths are limited to 15 minutes of work, but maybe you will learn to play something worth while or at least some patterns you can use in you compilation of sampled sounds.
Koblo also provides a number of very good manuals and presets, and maybe I will even buy the official version of these synths later - but this is another chapter and not a "low budget" thing... and probably the challenge/response system will not allow to use copies from you friends.

For me the German software synth Reaktor (NI) sounds spectacularNI Native Instruments Reaktor - sounds incredible, very good demo version
even with a first glance on the demo version you will recognize that this is a fantastic tool that enables integration of both sampled sounds and generated high end electronic sounds. Play around with the presets - this gives you a good time for weeks I guess.

Also - and this one is really a classic - the so called Rebirth 338 of Steinberg sounds spectacular and is very easy to use, even for the novice in music. Rebirth is software version of the legendary Roland TB 303 and 909 - just play around with the demo version, liste to itīs effektive filtering - incredible. Having a glance at the shortcuts you also find Randomize-Functions that give your tracks very special sounds (even if you have no idea what to do with them). You may also try to extract some grooves and tricky sounds from existing tunes it is incredible what you can do with the echos, distortion, patterns, the drum machine etc. Try to use single tracks and record them seperatly, record at speed of 500 bpm etc.
There are a lot of them available in the www for the Rebirth 2.0 and 1.5 user for download (but you need the demo software first!) - lots of fun.

Noodle is a quicktime based, interactive sound tool - artwork and a musical sculpture in itself - but also a realtime groove machine that plays a number of patterns you can remix by just moving and clicking the items on the screen. As it allows saving the different setups called Capsules very easily (and you can recconstruct every tune by clicking again on the capsules) - it is just big fun playing a around with it, also they promised to allow exchange of the Capsules, download of updates. A fantastic idea - a fantastic sound.

I tried several other softwarebased synths Softsampler etc. - still to be reviewed: eg. Bitsheadz (sorry various attempts to download failed)...
, the new Steinberg plugin- drum maschine, etc. etc. - let me know whether you have experience... Also you may want to try the Groovemaker - they have the slowest page of all music companies (sorry, but I fear this is true) and it is a little bit difficult to download at least here is the link for the direct access to their download section Groovemaker Download for Mac, it is also a reasonible programme.
Computer musicians always loved to extract sounds from popular games, maybe even with the more serious background to link with accoustic realities of your time. You always will find interesting aif or whatever files (Sound App is a must!!!), that may allow a remix. Be aware of copyright issues (if this is millionseller you will not earn a penny...) but this is thing that will really surprise your friends: Lara Croftīs singing with a techno rhythm or a whole Nanosaur song with you own voice introducing the ultimate highscore...
You will find other odd examples (a song completely made of gameboy sounds) on mp3.com by many artists.
A cute new little tool that allows you to edit Drumtracks based on Quicktime and export them via Midi - a must have for everyone interested in music - īcause has a lot of features even professional drum machines do not allow. E.g. you can set the tempo from 1-999 (no kidding) with 16 units per beat which allow almost endless variations and possibilities. It is also a practise tool as a metronome - but you can create the stranges sounds if you repeate.
You can export the create file either as Midi-File or a via Quicktime or to aif - e.g. you can use this to create a ryhthm, mute other tracks to create seperate drum tracks for every instrument, import them into a multi-track system like Vision or Cubase and mix down every single instrument afteerwards your dreams of drummachines come true - and this is 100% freeware.
You can download it directly from this page or you may want to check the website of virtual drummer for further information.
